The History of Football

In the first international match in 1872 between England and Scotland, teams lined up with one goalkeeper, one back, one halfback, and a whopping eight forwards. Similarly, many of today's teams line up in a 4-5-1 formation or variations thereof. Over football's approximately 125 years, there has been a significant relocation of players from attack to defense due to the introduction of the offside rule.

During the 1970s, there was a decisive shift in the philosophical development of football's essence. The term total football was first used to describe the Dutch team at the '74 World Cup. Here, players switched positions during the buildup, and the fluid rotation between midfield and forwards made it difficult for opponents to mark. This philosophy underpins some of the most successful and dominant teams in history such as Ajax, Barcelona, and the Spanish national team.

Danish Moments in Football

The Danish national team in the late 1980s was one of the last iconic football teams. The team, nicknamed Danish Dynamite, didn't win any trophies but won the hearts of football fans worldwide. With a combination of intoxicating attacking football, ahead-of-its-time tactics, paired with Scandinavian coolness and a red-and-white striped cult kit, the team quickly gained legendary status. The team boasted international stars such as Preben Elkjær, Michael Laudrup, Morten Olsen, Jan Mølby, and Søren Lerby, and reached the Round of 16 in Denmark's first World Cup appearance in Mexico '86.

Six years later, in 1992, Denmark made it to the European Championship finals at the last minute, replacing Yugoslavia, which was excluded due to civil war. Contrary to expectations, Denmark won narrow victories against powerhouses France and the Netherlands, and after just four games, found themselves in the final against the German world champions. The biggest surprise in European Championship history was then sealed with a 2-0 final victory over Germany, with two iconic goals from John 'Faxe' Jensen and Kim Vilfort.
