Who among these is the greatest player of all time is a debate that can never be resolved. But one thing is for sure: these men changed the sport and created memories for generations worldwide.

Basketball history

Basketball is a modern game and was first invented in 1891 in the USA by Canadian PE teacher James Naismith (1861-1939). Naismith was asked to construct a game for the winter season at the college where he worked. Originally, nine players played on each team, and the goals were peach baskets with bottoms, meaning players had to use a ladder to retrieve the ball after scoring. The first game in December 1891 ended 1-0.

Since then, the game has changed a lot. Technical development has meant that scoring in modern games often sees figures over 100 points. Shooting technique has contributed to this with the development from standing two-handed shots, which require space and time, to one-handed jump shots, which are fast and very difficult to cover. The physical development of players has also meant greater speed and jumping ability: an average height of around 200 cm is common for male elite players. Therefore, in the rules, attempts have been made to limit the dominance of tall players, including the introduction of the three-second rule, which means that attacking players who do not have the ball may not stay in the opponents' penalty area for more than three seconds. In 1984, the three-point scoring rule was also introduced, giving smaller players the opportunity to exploit their speed and long-range shooting ability.

In professional basketball, detailed statistics are kept for each player's fouls, scoring percentages, turnovers, etc., and all tactical moves are analyzed to the smallest detail. In this way, the game clearly bears the imprint of being developed in and associated with educational institutions such as high schools and universities.

Danish moments

In 1946, the American military team introduced basketball here, and the Danish Basketball Federation (DBBF) was founded in 1947. Three clubs were affiliated. The game achieved increasing popularity with new clubs emerging, especially in primary and secondary schools in the 1950s and 1960s. In the 1990s, Danish basketball experienced a large increase in membership, which may be related to the sport's general popularity in a golden age period, where the star team Chicago Bulls, led by Michael Jordan, dominated the world. Today, DBBF has about 100 clubs with approximately 11,000 members.

The first official Danish Championship was played in 1958, and until 1992, the tournaments were dominated by SISU from Gentofte (11 gold, 8 silver), Efterslægten from Copenhagen (6 gold, 4 silver), BMS from Ballerup (6 gold, 1 silver), and Falcon from Frederiksberg (4 gold, 8 silver). Then the medals shifted towards Bakken Bears (16 gold, 5 silver), the dominant Danish team in recent years. On the national team level, Denmark's men are in Europe's A group.
