10 Short Facts about Football
In football's early days, forward passes were illegal, limiting the tactical game to primarily a physical test of strength. Teddy Roosevelt threatened to ban football if new rules weren't implemented to better protect players from serious injuries. As a result, the forward pass was introduced. The first professional player in American football was William "Pudge" Heffelfinger, who was paid $500 to play in a game in 1892. Sammy Baugh leads all NFL statistics in passing, punting, and interceptions in the same season. The Chicago Bears have the highest number of retired jersey numbers with 13. Jerry Rice or Brett Favre are the only non-kickers to have played in more than 300 games. Tom Brady has twice as many playoff passing yards (7,345) as the third-highest on the list, Drew Brees (3,539). Only Peyton Manning comes close to Brady with 6,800 yards. The 5 most expensive players in NFL history based on estimated career value are Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Brett Favre, and Jerry Rice. Since 2002, one team has gone from worst to first in the same season. There have been 217 pairs of fathers and sons in NFL player history.
The Greatest Football Players
The greatest football players include iconic names such as Aaron Rodgers, Calvin Johnson, Ray Lewis, Brett Favre, Jerry Rice, Tom Brady, Lawrence Taylor, Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Joe Montana, Peyton Manning, Sammy Baugh, Terry Bradshaw, and more. Who among these is the greatest player ever is a debate that can never be agreed upon. But one thing is certain: these men changed the sport and created memories for generations worldwide.
History of American Football
American football, or football, is a team sport that was developed at American universities in the late 19th century from soccer and rugby. The first official game was played in 1875 between college teams Harvard and Yale, which has evolved into nearly 150 years of rivalry that continues to this day. The NFL (National Football League) was founded in 1902 by teams primarily made up of former baseball players. At that time, the sport closely resembled rugby, and the forward pass, which is now an integral part of the sport, was first allowed in 1906. With a league structure that only holds 16 games per team, each game and each tactical play is of massive significance.
Today, football is the biggest sport in the USA in terms of attendance, and the Super Bowl final is among the most-watched TV programs globally. The top players in American football are also among the highest-paid athletes in the world. Even college games receive significant attention and can attract over 100,000 spectators.
In recent times, the sport has been dominated by the New England Patriots with four Super Bowl titles, all of which have come since the turn of the millennium led by quarterback Tom Brady and iconic coach Bill Belichick. With six titles, the Pittsburgh Steelers are the team with the most titles, and in the 1970s, the Pennsylvania team was nearly unbeatable with its legendary "The Steel Curtain" defense and quarterback Terry Bradshaw. Other notable teams include the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers, Green Bay Packers, New York Giants, Denver Broncos, and more.
Danish Moments in American Football
In Denmark, American football has been on the rise since 2000. Today, there are more than 4,200 active players spread across 63 clubs. The tournaments are organized by the Danish American Football Federation (DAFF), with 11 players on the field for teams in the top leagues and 9 in the lower leagues.
Morten Andersen (b. 1960) is the only Dane to have had a major football career in the USA, where he played 25 NFL seasons for 5 different clubs and is a true legend. Nicknamed "The Great Dane," he still holds the league's second-highest records for games played (382), field goals (565), and points scored (2,544) besides being the New Orleans Saints' all-time leading scorer (1,318 points). Morten Andersen was a kicker: a highly specialized role responsible for executing the team's field goals, extra points, and kickoffs but not participating in open play. In 2017, Andersen was inducted into the sport's Hall of Fame.
