Thirty-five years ago, the world of basketball changed forever. In 1989, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) made the historic decision to lift amateurism restrictions, allowing professional players to compete in international tournaments. This landmark decision set the stage for the creation of the legendary 1992 Dream Team, a squad that would become the gold standard of excellence in basketball.
To commemorate this milestone, a special limited edition poster was presented to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver during the 2024 Olympics in Paris, celebrating the first basket scored by the Dream Team in an official FIBA tournament. This moment marked not just two points, but the dawn of a new era in global basketball.
The Dream Team, featuring basketball titans like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird, wasn’t just a team—it was a spectacle. Their performance at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics captivated the world, as they cruised to a gold medal with unmatched dominance. The average margin of victory was an astounding 44 points, a testament to the level of talent and skill that had never before been seen on the international stage.
As part of the ongoing celebration of this historic decision, THE PLAY® produced an exclusive and limited edition poster, which FIBA General Secretary Andreas Zagklis proudly presented NBA Commissioner Adam Silver with during the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
